Description

The San Antonio Food Bank Farm and Garden is the largest urban agriculture initiative within the city of San Antonio. The mission of the agricultural program is to provide fresh, local, and high quality produce to food insecure residents and to educate volunteers about food production as well as our food system at large. Volunteers may work in and between the garden, orchard, and farm during a volunteer shift. Tasks include planting, transplanting, harvesting, and post-harvest packing. At times assistance is needed with landscaping and property beautification. Because the farm and gardens are exposed to the elements, be aware that working conditions will fluctuate with the weather. The fields remain muddy for several weeks after rain. Please wear shoes (preferably boots) and clothes that will keep you comfortable and you do not mind getting dirty. Volunteer sessions may be cancelled in the event of extreme weather. Should a cancellation occur you will be notified via email and we will attempt to provide another volunteer opportunity indoors. If there are any special accommodations that need to be made, please call ahead. Unfortunately, the farm and garden volunteer opportunities are not handicap accessible. The Spurs Community Garden is an exciting initiative of the SA Food Bank's Nutrition Education Program. Volunteers will help with construction of gardens and gardening chores. Volunteers must register online at www.safoodbank.org to schedule an appointment. Volunteers must register online at https://safoodbank.org/register-to-volunteer/
